On Thursday, Feb. 23 the American Red Cross of Northern Nevada received a call from two local Incline Village families that had been forced to evacuate their homes because of a gas leak and needed shelter and food. Local volunteer, Nancy Barrett usually meets the families and issues immediate assistance but is currently confined to her home due to a broken leg.
Chief Ryan Sommers of the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District was contacted, picked up financial assistance cards for the families at Nancy’s home and delivered them directly to the displaced families. Red Cross in Reno was able to provide additional assistance via phone and will be helping the families for the next few days.
“Our volunteers make a difference every single day and our network of partners are essential and make us even more efficient,” said Zanny Marsh, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Northern Nevada. “Even when the storms have made the commute impossible (in some cases) the Red Cross is finding ways to deliver care in our communities and neighborhoods.”
