Supporting the people and places of Tahoe

Our charitable Services

We provide a flexible menu of charitable services to meet the needs of your clients. In addition to facilitating gifts to various funds already established at the Community Foundation, we can assist your clients in setting up funds that are a perfect fit for their current situation and for their future legacy.
Types of Funds

Fund
Options

  • These popular funds provide a convenient and flexible method for individuals, families, groups, and businesses who want to be personally involved with their giving. These funds are also a good solution for honoring the memory of loved ones. Tax benefits are received at the time contributions are received while the donor retains the right to make grant recommendations over time. This effectively separates tax decisions from grant making decisions, allowing your client to benefit from the tax deduction when it is most appropriate for their personal situation. Additionally, as the administrative costs and oversight burdens of private foundations continue to increase, advised funds offer a simple and effective alternative for your client’s charitable giving.
  • We offer a variety of funds that are useful for those clients who would like to make a more significant contribution and would prefer to have the Community Foundation handle grantmaking from the fund according to the intentions outlined at the time the fund is opened. These funds can be designed to support a single nonprofit, a program or geographic area, or the overall needs of the community. Once the fund is established, we will annually report to your client during their lifetime on impact of their charitable investment.
  • Leaving a charitable giving legacy is often important to your clients and for their families. We provide a Legacy Fund option, which allows your clients to plan for giving beyond their lifetime. Through a simple agreement, your client informs us of their intention to leave a portion of their estate to an endowed Legacy Fund they establish at the Community Foundation. They provide us with information on the nonprofits they would like to support, and we will make annual grants in their name to those organizations in perpetuity. We also provide, at no cost, for the updating of their intentions as their priorities change throughout their lifetimes. Legacy funds are a perfect way for your client to support their favorite charities or causes forever, creating a lasting legacy. And we are deeply committed to preserving your client’s charitable intentions along with their legacy.

The Power of Endowment

Endowment

Albert Einstein once called compound interest "the most powerful force in the universe."
By endowing any fund at the Community Foundation your client can tap the power of compound interest. Endowment ensures lasting impact by preserving principle while making grants from income. An endowed fund is invested for the long term, with the goal of earning returns that provide support for charitable needs in perpetuity through continued growth. Over time, the amount granted exceeds the original contribution(s) to the fund and all the while the principle remains intact and grows over time.
What to Give
Because we are a 501(C)3 public charity, contributions qualify for the maximum deductibility for income, gift, and estate tax purposes.

Types of Gifts

Cash & Cash Equivalents

Cash gifts - checks, credit cards, or actual cash - are the easiest way to give.

Marketable or Closely Held Securities

Stock, bonds, or mutual fund gifts may be used to establish a fund or add to an existing fund. The added benefit of giving appreciated securities held for more than one year is the avoidance of the capital gains tax on the appreciated portion of the gift.

Transfers From an Existing Private Foundation

Administering a private foundation under IRS rules can be burdensome and expensive. It is easy and convenient to convert a private foundation into a fund at the Community Foundation. Some advantages include preferred charitable deductibility of additional gifts, administrative cost savings, anonymity, and grantmaking support.

IRA Charitable Rollover

For clients 70 ½ years of age or older, directing a gift from their retirement account to a public charity allows them to avoid taxes on up to $100,000 per year. And this transfer is not subject to the deduction limits on charitable gifts. While current IRS rules prohibit IRA Charitable Rollovers into donor advised funds, we have a number of other fund options for your clients to consider.

Real Estate & Other Complex Gifts

Money is not the only gift option. Real estate, business interests, and tangible personal property all can be used to establish a charitable fund while providing your client with tax benefits.

Bequests

Including a charitable bequest in your client’s will or trust is a simple way for them to make a lasting gift. Percentage, specific or residual bequests may be used to establish a fund in their name, creating a legacy, or to add to an existing fund held at the Community Foundation. Bequests to any fund allow your client’s charitable intentions to be honored while significantly reducing taxes on their estate.

Life Insurance

Life insurance can be used to create a charitable gift in one of two ways. First, while retaining ownership of a policy, your client can name the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation as the beneficiary of the policy. Second, your client can transfer ownership of a policy to the Community Foundation and receive a current income tax deduction in the year the transfer is made.

Designated Beneficiaries - Retirement Plans & More

Designating all or part of unused assets in retirement plans, such as IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension or other tax-deferred plans, is the best asset for your clients to use for making a charitable gift while reducing the assets subject to income tax in their estates. Additionally, your clients may designate the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation and funds held at the community foundation in their estate plans as a beneficiary of investment accounts and bank accounts.
Charity Navigator - Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest charity evaluator, has continually awarded the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation its highest possible rating of 4 stars. In addition, we have received a perfect overall score of 100 points, designating us as an exceptional charity. We are in the top 1% of charities rated and this sets us apart from our peers and demonstrates to the public our trustworthiness.
The Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation has been certified by the Community Foundations National Standards Board confirming that we meet the most rigorous standards in philanthropy. This certification is designed to provide quality assurance to donors, as well as their legal and financial advisors.
